teaka wears a harness during walks to avoid tracheal collapse

many chihuahua owners email us with concerns related to their chihuahua puppies or chihuahua dogs experiencing breathing problems, more specifically frequent gagging, coughing and chihuahua wheezing and seizures that result in gasping for air. the following information may be helpful to you if your chihuahua has been affected by obstructed breathing or symptoms thereof.

chihuahuas are known to suffer from problems related to their soft palate or a collapsed trachea. it is a health concern that is characteristic of the chihuahua breed and is also commonly referred to as “reverse sneezing”.

tracheal collapse is a condition in which the trachea partially collapses or flattens out as your chihuahua is trying to breath. this leads irritation and results in the gagging, coughing and wheezing symptoms we mentioned above.

the trachea airway in your chihuahua is a very sensitive area

the trachea is the airway from the larnyx to the main bronchi in the lungs. it looks somewhat similar to that of a vacuum hose and has many stiff rings with flexible tissue connecting them. sometimes these rings are not stiff enough and are unable to hold the trachea open against the air pressure that’s created during respiration. the portion of the trachea that is not stiff is then sucked into the airway causing partial obstruction making it difficult for your chihuahua to breath.

the difference in a normal trachea vs. a collapsed trachea

factors that can lead to tracheal collapse in your chihuahua are obesity, irritants, allergies, repeated heart conditions, bacterial infections, viruses and second-hand cigarette smoke.

tracheal collapse can also be brought on by damage done from leash pulling, especially if you use a collar to walk your chihuahua. it is recommended that you switch to a harness to prevent any pushing or pulling against the trachea.

if any of these symptoms develop, take your chihuahua to the vet right away. this is an important chihuahua health concern. if they are not treated, damage can occur in the lungs, larynx, nasal passages and soft palate regions. your veterinarian will provide you with the right medications and you will be able to further prevent symptoms.

i would like you to meet my little miracle chihuahua olive. she is 10 months old, weighs 5 pounds and is a smooth-coat, deer head chihuahua with a shiny tan coat!

olive loves her “little champion” dog food made by pedigree, especially the beef casserole flavor she gets lots of “cookies” when she is good, or when she goes #2 outside.cookies are her favorite snack, so she takes full advantage of being well behaved when she knows there is a cookie involved! she can sit and shake your hand, but if you don’t have a cookie ready for her, she might not be willing to participate!

my little princess has more toys than most kids. a lot of her toys have been sewn back together or re-stuffed because she loves to tear them apart. she will usually start with the eyes and rip those off, then go for the ears… tail… anything she can destroy, she will! her favorite toy is a white stuffed pig. she is working on destroying her 4th one right now.

i got olive from a chihuahua breeder. i wasn’t really looking for a puppy, but a woman i worked with had one last chihuahua pup that needed a home and the moment i saw olive, it was love at first sight and i had to have her. she has been my best friend since the moment i became her mom and she has been a blessing.

olive is very protective of me and will often bark and show her “mohawk” when she hears someone other than me enter the house. she has a lot of funny little quirks to her personality and loves to play bite my husband’s nose, especially when he isn’t expecting it! she also loves to play fetch with her mini tennis balls, although after she is done fetching the ball, she will always drop it 3 feet in front of me rather than bring it all the way back, i guess she is a pup that plays by her own rules!

there was a point in time where i came very close to losing my olive. one night back in november, while my husband was outside working on the lawn, olive must have seen a squirrel or a bunny and chased it through a small opening in our fence. and from there… she was gone.

we looked everywhere, up and down every street in our neighborhood, we made fliers, stopped at peoples houses, and no one had seen her. she was gone, it was like she had just disappeared without a trace. after hours and hours of searching for her, with no evidence of where she went, i was heartbroken and devastated. i thought i lost her forever and felt like a piece of me was missing. it got dark and cold outside and my biggest fear was not knowing if she was safe.

the next day, someone who had seen our flier called and said he had hit olive on the highway the previous evening. he had said that he stopped his vehicle to see if she was still alive and when he approached her, she bit him and then ran away! he told us the last location he had seen her and we stopped at every single house in that area, desperate for some type of clue of where she might be.

after several “sorry, i haven’t seen her” answers, we continued searching, but with no luck. it was going on to 24 hours since she had gone missing and we weren’t getting anywhere with our search. until finally, my husband’s phone rang with the news that someone had found her.

she was scared, and hiding in the trees in one of the back yards of the houses i had stopped at. we immediately went to find her and the moment she saw me, she ran towards me and i couldn’t do anything but cry and be happy that she was safe and out of danger.

still, olive’s journey was far from over. she was covered in dirt and blood. she was hurt very bad and its a miracle that she survived out there all night and all the next day. we took her to the emergency vet where she had to have emergency surgery to repair a diaphragmatic hernia.

she also suffered a broken pelvis and a lot of road rash from being hit by a car. after 4 days in the hospital, olive was released and has been on the road to recovery since then! after about a week, she was back to her normal self and as spunky as ever! we had to keep her on bed rest and crated as often as possible for a month after her accident so her pelvis would heal correctly.

today olive is fully recovered and doesn’t even walk with a limp! i’m sure she will struggle with arthritis in the future, but right now, she is a healthy little chihuahua puppy with a lot of energy!

i am reminded everyday of how special my sweet little olive is, and how much of a miracle it was that she survived what she went through. she is a tough little cookie, a fighter and an inspiration to all!

superstar sandra bullock adopted a chihuahua with only two legs. that’s right, sandra bullock is mom to little ruby, an adorable two-legged chihuahua she rescued from a shelter in long beach several years ago.

after ruby’s adoption, sandra said, “we now have a dog with just two legs, she walks on her hind legs. she was born with like a little flipper here and a little flipper here, she’s like a little dinosaur, a velociraptor.”

“she’s got the best posture. she goes up the stairs only we haven’t taught her how to go down yet – that’s sort of like face plant central, and you don’t wanna laugh. she just gets so excited; she takes off,” she added.

bullock also admits that little ruby has most certainly brightened up her life and that, “any dog that is missing something is welcome in our house,” she said of her texas home, of which she and her husband, motorcycle man Jesse James, share with his dogs also.

“if we can’t handle them, we find them a home, but they seem to find us.”

speaking to reporters recently backstage after the golden globe awards, bullock also said that her dogs go everywhere they go, after all, who’s going to walk a two-legged dog?

sandra and husband also adopted a three-legged chihuahua-pomeranian named poppy from the same shelter that ruby was rescued from.

greetings famous chihuahua®!

this fabulous little chihuahua just full of personality is my little mini! she is 5 years old, weighs 4 lbs and the beautiful chihuahua puppy of a reputable chihuahua breeder in minnesota.

i named her mini because she was so tiny (mini muffin, danish etc.) when i got her. she loves chicken, carrots and apples, and her favorite dog plush toy is a very small elephant head that we sleep with every night. i have spent the last 3 years trying to find another toy like it but with no luck, god forbid she loses it!

every night we sleep together and often during the night she wakes me up with her kisses, who could get mad? i just go back to sleep. in the morning though, before we go downstairs, she hides her elephant toy and then gets it and brings it into the bed with us at night. i even had a special ramp made for my sweet mini just so she can get onto the bed safely.

mini is the love of my life, along with my other two chihuahuas.  i work hard, so when i come home to all the kisses, it’s the best feeling in the world!

the term apple head is used to describe any chihuahua with a round or ‘dome-like’ head similar to the shape of an apple. the upper part of the chihuahua’s skull is wider than the lower part in the jaw area.

if you look close at the top of the skull of most chihuahuas, you will notice that it is slightly sunken in just like the top of an apple. this area is called molera, a spanish word for ‘fontanel’, or any membranous gap between the bones of the cranium in an infant or fetus and it is similar to the ‘soft spot’ that human babies have on their heads upon birth.

according to chihuahua breed standards, the term apple head is required in the description of the ‘head’ of a chihuahua that includes an apple domed skull with either the presence or absence of molera. it is also used when referencing chihuahua puppies at an age where it is noticeable.

the term deer head is used to describe any chihuahua that does not have the characteristic apple shaped head. deer head chihuahuas tend to have a longer noses and a head shape similar to that of a miniature young deer. they also tend to have less chihuahua health problems.

famous chihuahua® loves new yorkers! we are sending out a huge thank you to all new yorkers who came out to rescue a chihuahua this week. here are the details behind this awesome chihuahua rescue story!

new yorkers rescue abandoned californian chihuahuas

new york is, like, totally awesome — especially when you’re an abandoned californian chihuahua. fifteen of these goggle-eyed living toys, best known for inhabiting the handbags of paris hilton and other hollywood b-listers, became new yorkers wednesday after being rescued from the west coast.

the evacuation was in response to what the american society for the prevention of cruelty to animals (aspca) calls the “massive overpopulation of chihuahuas in california.”

“all of a sudden they found themselves with these chihuahuas,” said diane wilkerson, director of the aspca volunteer program.

she blamed a change in hollywood trends and the sour economy for an increase in homeless chihuahuas. but “small dogs are very, very popular here in new york, so there seemed to be a really nice way new york could work with this.”

the rescue operation maintained the luxurious standards to which the chihuahua breed is famously accustomed.

all 15 flew in the cabin of a virgin america jet from san francisco last week and took up residence at the shiny aspca headquarters in manhattan.

by wednesday, 11 of them — bebop, honey, hancock, annie, jeb, colette, tina, orlando, bella, holly and nalla — were ready to choose new owners.

more than 100 new yorkers lined up in icy temperatures to get their chance. some waited from 8:00 am to midday to be sure.

“they got famous. i watched them on channel 2, channel 7, channel 4,” said oleg, 62, a russian immigrant at the front of the line.

“the dog i take will be really lucky,” he said in his still pronounced accent. “he’s going to live with me and sleep next to my bed.”

amoura leigh, 21, planned even greater delights for her dream chihuahua.

leigh, sporting pink hair, pink eyebrows and studs through her bottom lip, said chihuahuas are perfect pets “because they like to be held and I like to hold them.”

“and dress them up,” she added. “a pink rhinestone chihuahua collar, oh yes!”

a chihuahua bought in a pet store can cost anything from 700 to 1,400 dollars, dog lovers in the queue said, so a free animal is a big attraction.

but while chihuahuas are small, they are not maintenance free — a realization that may have led to fashion-crazed californians dumping their pets in shelters.

“they’re not accessories,” wilkerson said. “the novelty wears off. they think this isn’t fun anymore.”

dog fanciers said the little beasts also have a real attitude.

“they’re aggressive and very protective of owners. they love to snap,” said mari anna ficco, 45. “but they also like to dress up. they know they’re cute. they’re drama queens.”

not everyone in new york went gaga over the miniature exodus.

” can’t stand chihuahuas!” yelled a passing bus driver through his open window.

“go get a pit bull!”

famous chihuahua® was deeply saddened to hear about the recent passing of superstar chihuahua, wheely willy. if you have never heard of wheely willy, here are the details of his passing and the amazing story that lives in the legacy of this amazing chihuahua. rip wheely willy.

… wheely willy is dead. or is he?

yes, it’s true, his “mother” deborah turner found him curled up next to her in bed on the morning of dec. 22, his tiny heart stopped. she wrapped a blanket around the dog, cradled him in her arms, held onto his little paws and wept.

but wheely willy the symbol lives on. just ask any kid who attended elementary school between 1999 and now.

chances are they met wheely willy. and if they met wheely willy, chances are they haven’t forgotten him.

“life is what you make of it,” was willy’s message.

and that’s a pretty powerful message, coming from a 4-pound chihuahua that overcame hate, paralysis and homelessness to become a tv star and eventually tour the world, bringing even the royal prince and princess of japan to their knees.

no one really knows where wheely willy’s life begins or what horrors befell him.

but he got a second chance in the early ’90s when a woman came upon a cardboard box, sealed with tape, on some street in los angeles. inside she found a hairless, emaciated, shivering little dog.

he didn’t bark, or even whine, because, she later learned, someone had cut his vocal chords. nor did he try to jump out, because, she later learned, his back was broken, leaving his hind legs paralyzed.

the woman took the little dog to a vet she knew who did rescue work, and there he lived, in a cage, for the next year. until deborah turner heard about him.

at the time, deborah owned the doggie in the window pet store in long beach, and she too did rescue work. she arrived at the vet’s office one day expecting to find a sad sack. instead, she found one of the most playful dogs she had ever met, dragging his legs behind him like he didn’t have a care in the world.

“we were all standing around looking at him with tears in our eyes,” she recalls. “well, he didn’t know what the sad story was.”

the vet had named him chilly willy, because before his hair grew back and he put on some fat, he shivered all the time.

deborah’s plan was to return to Long Beach to spread the word of chilly willy’s plight and try and find him a home. but when the vet put willy back in his cage, his ears went all hangdog droopy.

“ok, give him back to me,” she announced.

and soon willy was in a ford explorer on his way to long beach.

deborah’s first order of business was to give willy his legs back. she tried putting his hind legs on a small skateboard, but his front legs couldn’t keep up. next she tied a bunch of helium balloons to the back of the baby pajamas she had bought him, but instead of just lifting his back legs, it lifted his whole body off the ground.

then she saw an ad in a pet magazine for the k-9 cart. the day it arrived, she hooked willy up to his new wheels. he took off running, head thrown back, ears flying.

“this might sound dramatic,” deborah says. “but it took his world from black and white into full blown color. because that’s where life began for him.”

deborah took willy everywhere she went. he rode in the cart at wild oats. and he waited in line at the bank. he even went to the restroom with her since she had to express his bladder for him because of the paralysis.

out on the streets, it seemed like everyone wanted to know: what’s the story there with that little guy?

soon the newspapers came calling. then tv.

she also got a call from the people who owned the trademark to chilly willy, the cartoon penguin: we really think willy’s a great dog and all, but drop the name or we’ll sue, was the gist of their message. and that’s how chilly willy became wheely willy.

suddenly, wheely willy was everywhere.

he did animal planet (where he remains one of their highest rated shows), national geographic and the talk show circuit, sitting down with mike and maty, leeza and tammy faye baker.

the publicity led to personal appearances. and soon every hospital and elementary school around wanted to book him. deborah even did some high school graduation keynote speeches, giving some version of the “i can” speech with willy by her side.

he made kids on chemotherapy laugh for the first time in weeks. and a woman in an alzheimer’s home in los alamitos saw willy and broke into “silent night,” singing the entire song, word for word, and prompting nurses to phone the family so they could quickly drive over and see their mother speak again.

together, willy and deborah traveled the globe, making appearances in germany and canada. “he’s particularly popular in japan,” she says.

she and willy met prince hitachi and princess hanako a few years ago. when they saw the dog, the royals got down on the floor, causing a minor sensation. out on the streets of tokyo, pictures of willy flashed on the giant jumbo trons.

willy’s story made it into the “chicken soup for the cat and dog lover’s soul” book. in “working dogs: tales from animal planet’s k-9 to 5 world,” his work in the spinal unit at the long beach veterans hospital (where his picture still hangs) is documented. his story is even on the standardized reading proficiency test given to school children in texas.

sometimes someone would ask if willy did any tricks. “his trick is that he can wake up every day happy,” deborah would tell them.

a rainy day last january marked the beginning of the end.

deborah was on her way to an elementary school presentation when she slipped off her rain-slicked porch and willy flew out of her arms. she wound up in a wheelchair with a broken leg. willy wound up in a hospital with a broken hip, leg and jaw.

three surgeries followed, but willy never really recovered.

on new year’s day she met me at a coffee shop, carrying a little royal blue velvet bag. inside was a round tin of willy’s ashes.

“there’s some part of me that knew he wasn’t going to live forever,” she told me. “but then there was some fanciful part of me that thought maybe he will live forever.”

that’s the part she should listen to.

dear famous chihuahua®,

this is my long haired chihuahua carmela. she is 9 months old, weighs 3.2 lbs and was purchased from a reputable chihuahua breeder.

carmela doesn’t have a favorite food because she loves all food! she does however have a favorite snack, bacon treats or chicken flavored raw hides. her favorite chihuahua plush play toys are her leopard stuffed bone and a stuffed round yellow chicken. she also loves to roll on her back, so cute!

i simply can’t imagine how my life would be without my carmela. she is my best friend and my faithful little companion. so much that when i leave the house she waits hours for me at the top of the steps to come home. my boyfriend told me she does this and i didn’t believe him so we set up a camera for me to see it for my own eyes. i love my little carmela!
