what is a blue chihuahua?

February 21st, 2010 · 32 Comments

what makes a blue chihuahua puppy different from other chihuahua puppies? not a heck of a lot as all chihuahuas are special and unique in their own way, but blue chihuahuas are best described as a chihuahua puppy that is bred to have a dull silver-grey-coat with a tinge of blue.

blue chihuahua puppy

it is said that a blue chihuahua can be produced from mating a black and tan chihuahua, a chocolate, or even a fawn parent, but the parents must carry the recessive blue gene in their line of heritage. the blue in a blue chihuahua can also be part of a patterned, a tri-colored or multi-colored coat.

much controversy exists around the subject of breeding blue chihuahuas as hidden defects on the gene that is linked to the blue color can result in serious coat problems and other health issues. for these reasons, it is advised to never breed a blue chihuahua with another blue chihuahua.

it’s unlikely to come across a blue chihuahua at a chihuahua rescue organization as blue chihuahuas are very rare and highly prized. in some countries, they can set buyers back up to $10,000 depending on how popular they are. chihuahuas are currently the ‘hot’ dog breed in japan, a country where their fast-growing pet industry is estimated at more than $10 billion a year.

paying high prices for a chihuahua with a particular trait as such is purely the decision of the buyer, however famous chihuahua would like to remind potential chihuahua buyers that rescued chihuahuas like papi the star of beverly hills chihuahua and loki, mickey rourke’s dearly departed chihuahua, are prime examples of big surprises than can come in a small package.

This is another example of how dogs that should not be bred are being bred by breeders who just want to make a quick buck.

I have a blue who was rescued from a Missouri puppy mill. She is a longhair but due to the health problems stated above, she has severe alopecia. As a result, doesn’t have much hair at all, just on her head, chest, and paws. These millers don’t care about the dogs, just the $$$.

I have a tan akc chihuahua male and after 7 breedings with a black-blue female; we finally have 2 gray blues and 2 black blues – none of them have brown eyes. The grays have blue eyes and the blacks have hazel eyes. How rare are these fellows?

My chihuahua just had puppies. I was not breeding her to make money off of her just to be able to give my grandmother one of her puppies. My grandmother passed away though before the puppies were born. I did get one blue out of the litter though and it is GORGEOUS! The mother is a black and brown and the father is white and black. I will probably put them up for sale because I cannot keep them but do people still buy them if you spay and neuter them?? That is what I would like to do.

I love this site. I just got a blue T-Cup Chi today. He’s the cutest thing I’ve ever seen. I didn’t even know that there was such thing as a blue Chi. My boyfriend is the one who showed me photos and turned me onto the idea and then coincidentaly I stumbled onto a breeder with a T-Cup Chi in the Miami Herald. We had to drive for a while but it was well worth it. He was born on June 1st of 2009 so he’s still very young. I have owned Shih Tzu in the past and learned all I could about them so now that I’m a new Chi owner I am glad to find your website so I can learn all I can about the Chihuahua breed. I love this site already!!!

hi i have brown/tan chi and am getting a pure white chi today and was asked by the previous owner if they were bred if she could have one… i have been thinking of breeding my lil girl but i’ve found 1 site that said basically it may not b such a good idea to breed these two … any one have any suggestions or comments? i am really hoping to get a white puppy out of the two… but i am having 2nd thoughts now.. my grl is approx. 2 1/2 and my male is 3 yrs… thanks for any input=) my email is bjmom007@yahoo.com

  • 17 jeanna // Aug 15, 2009 at 4:09 pm

if it helps any.. my grl is a deerhead and has had a litter before (all survived) and now treats my sons 2 kittens as if they were her babies… the male is an applehead chi.. again thanks for your input=)

  • 18 Sandi // Aug 16, 2009 at 2:29 am

I bred my Deer & Applehead, the female was all white with a few brown spots and the male was blue with white spots. All my pups came out white with brown spots with the exception of 1 that was black & white. The black & white is all applehead, the others however get mistaken as mix breeds. Sometimes the mix of an apple & deer doesn’t look like a “typical” Chi, but still adorable non the less. :) I have heard something about the older a female gets they get less patient with babies but I’m not a breeder so I’m not sure. Hopefully you can get some answers here from some breeders to help you figure that out. I just wanted to let you know about the mix of the 2 kinds of Chi’s. Good luck! :) twitter.com/o0ochillyo0o

My black and white girl and btown and white boy such had their first litter. I got one black and white, two brown and white, and TWO silver and white( one is more of a charcoal grey and the other a light silver) I didn’t know that this was possible. So what color do I call them- blue?silver? grey?

  • 24 Anne // Nov 23, 2009 at 6:41 am

Good Lord people! Don’t any of you know that chihuahuas are the second most common dog to end upin a shelter aside from a pitbull? I run an independent rescue for chihuahuas and pits – I am the one picking the overbred and unwanted dogs off the streets. PRODUCTS of people who breed. It’s just disgusting and irresponsible. As cute as the blue varieties are, remember that there are COUNTLESS purebreds being euthanized in a shelter somewhere.

I have an all black chihuahua and she just turned “Sweet Sixteen” in human years, she just lost her front tooth and her hair is thinning alot!!! I love her she’s my big girl!!! How old would she be in dog years and how long do they live?

  • 28 famous chihuahua editor // Dec 4, 2009 at 9:10 pm

it is a common belief that 1 human year is equal to 7 dog years. that is not very accurate, since dogs reach adulthood within the first couple of years. there is a formula used by canine experts that’s more accurate. (as accurate as one can judge these things)

the formula is: 10.5 dog years per human year for the first 2 years, then 4 dog years per human year for each year after. onlineconversion.com/dogyears.htm

  • 30 Helen // Jan 15, 2010 at 1:05 am

I have a blue tri girl with gorgous dark grey coat, and recently bought a blue male. I don’t plan to let them together when she is in season, because have been warned not to breed 2 blues. However when he arrived ,we looked at him and he looks very much chocolate brown.even though his papers say blue. I guess he started out grey and turned brown as many blues do. Now I am wondering if as he is brown he maybe o’k to mate with my blue, when she is old enough. in the meantime I have a cream and white girl just gone into season, and will see how that goes.Thanks.H inNew Zealand

I just saw Ramsey and Pablo on Dogs 101, which got me to your site!!! I have 4 Chihuahuas… a brother and sister, Tookie-3#, and Keisha-2#: both chocolate and white. Keisha’s daughter, Keiana-1.5#: white with butterscotch, and Tookie and Keisha’s nephew, Sammie a whopping 4#: all chocolate with a small white patch on his chest. My son gave me Tookie when he was 3 months old, that will be 5 years ago come April!!! We are inseparable!!! A close friend who was breeding her Chihuahua’s, was slowly trimming down her dog community at her farm home. A King Lab and 9 Chihuahua’s were a little much. She asked me if I was interested in Keisha as she was small and figured Tookie would get along with his sister. Not soon after I got Keisha I got a phone call asking me if I was interested in Keisha’s daughter as she to was very small and fragile, Keiana fit in perfectly… So it was me and my 3 Babies… We were all visiting at my friend’s farm and there was a new litter of pups… Yes, you guess it… I fell in Love with this little brown puppy I call Sammie. He was only 4 weeks at that time and he’s been with me since he was 3 months. Very rarely does anyone ask about my human kids… they all wanna know about my 4 legged babies… They are very well taken care of, have a fenced yard to run in, warm blankies to sleep in and plenty of food and water…
