What is a blue chihuahua? How do blue chihuahuas differ from other chihuahuas?

what exactly is a blue chihuahua and what makes a blue chihuahua puppy different from other chihuahua puppies?  all chihuahuas are special and unique in their own way, but blue chihuahuas are best described as a chihuahua puppy that is bred to have a dull silver-grey-coat with a tinge of blue.

a blue chihuahua is rare and can be an apple head chihuahua or a deerhead chihuahua and is produced from mating a black and tan chihuahua, a chocolate, or even a fawn parent, but the parents must carry the recessive blue gene in their line of heritage.  the blue in a blue chihuahua can also be part of a merle patterned – tri-colored or multicolored coat.

the chihuahua club of america warns that coat color in chihuahuas is often linked to genes with undesirable traits or birth defects.  the merle pattern and blue coat color can often come with common health problems.  this is another reason that blue chihuahuas are rare.

like teacup chihuahuas, much controversy exists around the subject of breeding blue chihuahuas by blue chihuahua breeders as hidden defects on the gene that is linked to the blue color can result in serious coat problems and other health issues.  for these reasons, it is advised to never breed a blue chihuahua with another blue chihuahua.

because blue chihuahuas are rare, there’s a slim chance that you’ll find one in a shelter.  in some countries, they are highly prized and can set buyers back up to $10,000 depending on how popular they are.  chihuahuas are currently the ‘hot’ dog breed in japan, a country where their fast-growing pet industry is estimated at more than $10 billion a year.

paying high prices for a chihuahua with a particular trait as such is purely the decision of the buyer, however famous chihuahua would like to remind potential chihuahua buyers that rescued chihuahuas like papi the star of beverly hills chihuahua and loki, actor mickey rourke’s dearly departed chihuahua, are prime examples of big surprises than can come in a small package.

Hi, I have a rescued 15 month old blue chihuahua that I’ve had for ten weeks. From what I know, he tested positive for the alopecia gene. His was pretty bad when the rescue group got him because of his previous owners abusing him. It got a bit better in foster care, but he seems to have had significant hair growth in the last few weeks. If they test positive, can the hair still fully grow back?

Blues and chocolates can be tested for alopecia, the gene that causes hair loss. If the gene is not present you will not have the problems associated with it in your blue or chocolate chi. If your dog tests negative and still has health issues then the culprit may be an allergy to food, contact dermatitis with an allergy source or even photosensitivity but it won’t be alopecia. Many dogs are allergic to chicken! My mom’s dog lost most of his hair from itching and rubbing because of a chicken allergy. Once off chicken he recovered fully. I also have blues and chocolates and every one is in great health with no hair loss. Also, you can get a clue if your dog has a blue or chocolate gene from the nose and foot pad color. Chocolates will have brown noses and foot pads and blues will have blue noses and foot pads. The color can range from very light, even pinkish in chocolates to very dark, even almost black in blues. So a cream dog with self colored or brown nose has the chocolate gene. A red dog with a slight blue tint or purpleish color to a black nose will have the blue gene. My red spotted white stud has a bit of purple at the center if his black nose and my fawn bitch has a very light brown nose. Together they have produced creams, fawns, a tri color chocolate blue, a chocolate sabled fawn, a red and white with both a blue and chocolate gene (she produced both blue and chocolate puppies as well as red, silver (very light blue) fawn sabled and even puppies that were nearly all white with pale fawn spots) my foundation stud and bitch also produced a black, red and white male marked just like a beagle who produced tri blues and chocolates, creams and golds.
I never set out to produce rare colors in high numbers and I never knew about the issues these colors could have until a friends blue dogs had issues aside don’t. I focused on conformation and personality and the colors are just the icing on the cake. Also I do not price my dogs according to color but according to quality.

My pup was blue when we bought her, but now she’s faded to mostly tan and white. A few areas are still grey in color. I don’t mind, she’s absolutely beautiful! Its just surprising that their coats can change quit a bit while they grow.

I’d like to add a little tidbit of information that might help some owners. My Chihuahua/Miniature pincher mix was having a hair loss problem. Even treating his thyroid condition didn’t help. then the vet remembered that some “blue” breeds have this problem treating with a daily dose of melatonin. It affects many breeds with the dark chocolate fur. only the dark fur gets sparse, not any other color. Long story short, 3mg of melatonin 2 times a day restored 85% of his fur. Of course this is a lifetime regimen. stopping the supplement will result in the hair falling out again. of course discuss dosing with your vet before trying this.

Our new litter of pedigree long haired Chihuahua babies are now 8 weeks old and ready to leave. Chihuahuas are very loyal and loving little puppies and require minimal exercise but maximum cuddles. They will grow to approximately 6-8″ at the shoulder.
