What is a blue chihuahua? How do blue chihuahuas differ from other chihuahuas?

what exactly is a blue chihuahua and what makes a blue chihuahua puppy different from other chihuahua puppies?  all chihuahuas are special and unique in their own way, but blue chihuahuas are best described as a chihuahua puppy that is bred to have a dull silver-grey-coat with a tinge of blue.

a blue chihuahua is rare and can be an apple head chihuahua or a deerhead chihuahua and is produced from mating a black and tan chihuahua, a chocolate, or even a fawn parent, but the parents must carry the recessive blue gene in their line of heritage.  the blue in a blue chihuahua can also be part of a merle patterned – tri-colored or multicolored coat.

the chihuahua club of america warns that coat color in chihuahuas is often linked to genes with undesirable traits or birth defects.  the merle pattern and blue coat color can often come with common health problems.  this is another reason that blue chihuahuas are rare.

like teacup chihuahuas, much controversy exists around the subject of breeding blue chihuahuas by blue chihuahua breeders as hidden defects on the gene that is linked to the blue color can result in serious coat problems and other health issues.  for these reasons, it is advised to never breed a blue chihuahua with another blue chihuahua.

because blue chihuahuas are rare, there’s a slim chance that you’ll find one in a shelter.  in some countries, they are highly prized and can set buyers back up to $10,000 depending on how popular they are.  chihuahuas are currently the ‘hot’ dog breed in japan, a country where their fast-growing pet industry is estimated at more than $10 billion a year.

paying high prices for a chihuahua with a particular trait as such is purely the decision of the buyer, however famous chihuahua would like to remind potential chihuahua buyers that rescued chihuahuas like papi the star of beverly hills chihuahua and loki, actor mickey rourke’s dearly departed chihuahua, are prime examples of big surprises than can come in a small package.

  • I have a 4 month old blue and tan chi and she scratches all the time. The vet checked her and could find nothing wrong, yet. I’m so glad I read these stories because I can now have my vet watch for some of these problems. Great info.

  • Our half Chihuahua has had a Blue Chihuahua male puppy. Wondering if the mix will help him avoid the skin allergies?

  • Our sweet blue Chihuahua was given to us 5 years ago. She is more than special to us. She has filled our heart’s with the same love a child would. “Baby” makes each day a joy, just because she is so eager to love us. She is a heavenly gift.

  • I have a blue chi. He looks black, but in strong light/sunlight you can see he is quite blue!
He has alopecia (going bald) and is absolutely adorable and the love of my life!
I knew nothing about chihuahuas when I got him. He came from a backyard breeder (I found this out later), when I took him to my vet the first time she said he was malnourished. You could tell because the tops of his ears folded backward.
He’s now a whopping 5 pounds and has bat ears lol!
    Thank you for the info!

  • This is Chiko! I got him in 2001. I too knew little or nothing about blue Chi’s but when I saw him I knew I had to have him! He was a “double coat” and was a complete fur ball as a baby. Two years later all his skins problems began and at that point I did extensive research and learned there was not much I could do! I loved him anyway but he is absolutely allergic to fleas! He will scratch till he bleeds with even one flea! For 15 years we have battled his skin problems whic are sometimes horrific and heartbreaking because they take forever to clear up and it is very costly. He’s worth every cent and despite his skin allergies and a few other issues he’s been a delight! I’ve owned several chi’s but only one blue. This is Chiko as a grown older gent! Please overlook the coat and remember he had to have been the most beautiful puppy I’ve ever seen to this day. He just grew up and has had skin issues for years and despite the problems take a look … My boy is still handsome and so distinguished looking! Love him to pieces! I present Chiko Pena!

My best friend, my little girl,, we ,my husband and I called her our daughter🤗 chihuahua pup’s grow up with such human character it’s! Her name Nina I miss her so much!, She went every where with me ,she sat in her bed and watched me in the kitchen ,my every move! It is true that they will have a significant other, my husband was her #1 but OK, I want to share with the one above that has the attacks, Nina did the same in her younger years, what worked for us to help her was ,I would talk softly to her ,praising,,I called it “Talking her back” Very Scarry for her and us but just keep calm,i was able to get close and slowly started to pet her,Yeah
Nina lived a very good life of 16 years, not science approved or any thing but I kept a diary and logged when if happen ,what was going on ,even the bearametri, the weather, and we started to notice a pattern, when my husband and I raised our voices at each other ,was the pattern we saw, so in a way she kept peace and we grew to be a stronger couple ,and family of 3 happy ever after 16 years! If love could have saved Nina she would have lived for ever! I still talk to her and cry out her name! She got sick ,it all happens so fast next she could not walk, or eat Sept 5 2015 we put her to sleep, the hardest thing I have ever done in my life, my husband thinks it is time for another, but I just can not let her go, I wish I would have kept her teeth cleaned! I learned too late, once they get old the sedation will harm them and she never snapped out of it ,yes I carry that burden It was all my fault, I miss her sooooo much! My Nina

  • I am considering a blue Chihuahua puppy from a reputable breeder. The puppy’s mom is black. both she and the dad were both bred and raised by this breeder. He knows their lineage and history. The mom carries the recessive blue (“diluted”) gene that occasionally results in a blue pup. My breeder reported that the only concern regarding a ” blue” Chihuahua would be if two dogs that carried the dilute gene were bred together. He assures me that is not the case. Should. I be concernerd over skin, coat or health problems down the road?

  • By the way, the chihuahua in the picture is “Pepito” and he is a Vegan dog <3, just saying!

We have had our blue for 4 years now and actually rescued her in a shelter completely bedraggled and had never been out of a cage. She was part of a hoarding rescue. She’s now living the high life. Her fur is nice except for the top line, which is bald. We adore her!

  • I have a Blue Chihuahua, i guess his birth defect or health problem is that he is loosing his hair from the top, but under him he has long hair. Now he is 6 years old and he has almost no hair on top from head to mid part of his body. But full long hair under him and on his behind.

  • Our female chihuahua just had puppies, father is tan and mother is solid black with white chest and white feet. She had 2 females and 2 males. 2 chocolate colord, one is tan just like dad and the other is this color, the blue. Very beautiful puppy. What worries me is that oreo (momma) might push this one away for being different. I watched her do it once. Guess I will have to keep a very close eye on this one

  • I have 2 female teacups, black and tan apple, fawn apple, deer head. Both were totally spoiled when I rec’d them, esp no straying ftom dogfood. Of course they find everything and eat it, and get bad sick. They thin out in fur, esp on head and ears, 2x yr. I use organic neem oil on their skin, introduced a daily snack, make sure they get outside for play and they’ve been fine. They love being a real dog. They r bakers too no ypping. Lol

Wow, I just brought home a 5 mo. little Chi (possibly a mix, looks like a chihuahua but his ears don’t stand all the way up) and he definitely is a blue. I picked him out of a litter at the local shelter because of his coloring. Didn’t know anything about his coloring so googled chihuahua colors and surprise! He is rare!

Now I’m worried though because he has had some hair Loss on his forehead and his ears are hairless. The hair appears to be growing back on his head. The shelter told me he probably had lost it because of stress. Also they quarantined him because of “sniffles” but he checked out to be clean of any contagion. What he has is actually sneezing fits if he is over stimulated. So these things are probably related to his color and I’m glad it probably isn’t an underlying problem. Now just worried how this will affect him the rest of his life.

  • I have a blue chi i bought from a breeder here in Arizona. He is the most amazing beautiful dog, very playful and he loves to cuddle. He got parvo twice and had a chunk of skin fall off. He has some small bald spots on his hind leg the vet said his color makes him more likely to have skin problems. He is 2 years old and a whopping 7.9oz no problems so far for the past year. #Cowboy

  • I have an 8 year old hairless bluegrey chi named Bella. Fortunately I haven’t had an health issues I have noticed when she was about 3 she began to have age spots and they have increased as she continues to age. Very sensitive to sun and cold,of course,BC she has no hair, but she is best. Everyone thinks its weird when they see her with no hair and make fun but she is unique and we love her

  • I have a purebred male chi that is a beautiful blond color with tan markings like a Doberman on his face and paws. I was told this is a rare coat. What I think is really neat about his color is that in the light his head looks silvery blue. Has anyone ever seen something that sounds like I’m describing?

  • I have a three year old blue. My daughter got him as a puppy. Whoever sold him had know idea. He’s my precious boy!

  • I just got my chi 3 days ago and did not know she was a blue I thought she was a very pretty chi with a silver blue coat of hair.Since bringing her home and finding out she is a blue and doing research I am a little concerned but I know she did not come from a blue mom and blue dad.Dad was black from couple houses down and mom was fawn. Do I need to be worried about health problems with my little girl.

I’m the owner of a 9 month old, male, blue mini applehead chihuahua , named Pèpè. If you were wondering, yes he is named after the cartoon character! When I first received him, he had a full coat. Now, he is pretty much naked while still having some hair around his neck. He is also an EXTREMELY picky eater. Sometimes he will absolutely love his food and other times he will barely eat at all. I have attempted to switch between soft and dry food with no real winner standing out. We love him and want the best for him. Does anyone have any comments, suggestions, and or wisdom that they are willing to provide so we can help our little 2.5lb boy!

What you guys are reading are possibilities. It doesn’t mean the dog will definitely have Alopecia or health issues. I live in Thailand and blue Chihuahuas are very common here. 99% of them are completely healthy. You only see health issues when the breeders actually breed 2 blue bloodlines together. Out of the thousands of blues here I have only seen 3 with Alopecia and that was only because the breeder bred two blue bloodlines together. It’s like the issue of Merle. We also have tons of Merle. With properly educated breeders these conditions rarely happen. Just stick to the rules and only breed good bloodlines. I myself have Merle Chihuahuas and blues. I have never had any health problems in any of them because we do not mix the bloodlines. Do your research before you buy a pup. Check the pedigree and bloodlines.

Our Applehead Chihuahua is 10 she has some skin issues but a wonderful dog, as of late she has had (3) some sort of attack. Don’t know what is going on with her, she almost acts like she is tripping or something. She seems to lose control of her hind end, couldn’t walk well and seemed be very unsteady. If I came to her she jumps back like she is being abused (which is something that never happens ) she is very withdrawn. Within 6-7 hrs she was right back to normal. When these attacks happen Emma( obviously my dog )don’t want nothing to do with me cuddling her, she is a love bug all the time except when she is having a attack
