what exactly does the term teacup chihuahua mean and is it a legitimate term for characterizing a specific type of chihuahua?  much controversy exists over this term, so let’s get the chihuahua facts!

the term teacup chihuahua is mainly an american term.  it’s often used to refer to the size of a chihuahua and shouldn’t be used to categorize a specific type of chihuahua as you would reference a short-haired vs a long-haired chihuahua or a deerhead chihuahua vs an applehead chihuahua.

are teacup chihuahuas tiny chihuahuas that fit into a cup?

most chihuahua puppies are born teacup-sized, but they usually grow out of it.  it is important to note that chihuahuas of this size must be handled delicately and dressed accordingly with the proper chihuahua clothes to keep them warm and properly shielded.

many prospective chihuahua buyers are also unaware of the fact that if a chihuahua puppy isn’t nourished properly from birth, they will not grow to their full potential. this undernourishment will keep a chihuahua puppy from growing to their full potential as they reach adulthood.

this is also why it is very important to ask a chihuahua breeder what they are feeding their pups and for you to do your research as to what required nutrients your chihuahua will need once you bring them home. not all pet food guarantees your chihuahua proper nourishment.

My chi is too small (2 kg) as she is the runt of the family.

The litter was large (8) and her brothers and sisters gray – whereas she is black and white – and they were much larger and round. My chi baby looked far too small and long, practically hairless, like a sausage! I knew at once she was the runt and I was angry at the greedy woman who would just breed her chihuahua year after year just to make fast easy money. (This was before chihuahuas were deemed cool because of the celebritys buying them as fashion accessories). Nevertheless I had to have her and care for her. The vet told me because of her extremely small size she had respiratory problems and I was never to breed from her or she could die.

PLEASE people the author of this blog is right! If you really love dogs, do NOT encourage the breeding of too tiny chihuahuas.

6 months later because of a cold autumn I would dress her in a tennis sock! which I had cut holes out of for her legs and bottom. Her long hair still hadn’t grown much by then.

But she was a happy little dog – as she is now at almost 12 years of age. She is my little ray of sunshine.

You can see her, and her jack russell sister, Chester, on my blog (click my name link). Her name is Sugar.

By the way, I love this blog 🙂

I have three tiny t’s for sale right now. They are all charting under 3 pounds. If you want to see the pictures I have a website at tinytreasurechihuahuas.com. Tiny T’s are a lot to care for and if you don’t have the 24/7 a four pound chihuahua is still small but makes a better pet.

You are right that they are prone to some disorders because of their reduced size. The most significant of which can be blood sugar disorders. It’s always worth offering some food or drink after they have been playing just to keep their blood sugar up.

I like the pup with the yellow t-shirt, so cute!

They have too many health issues, overbred, overated. please don’t support backyard low quality breeders. Adopt from a local shelter regualar size chihuahua. most small home breeders don’t pay for spay/neuter or vet bills for checkups YOU end up w/ years of health issues. Think Twice about it

“Teacup” chihuahua means one that’s undersized and overbred and named cutely to try to sell it at an excessive price. Some idiot gave my friend’s daughter a “teacup” chihuahua. Naturally once the little kid saw the dog, what could the mom say? Well, of course the chihuahua died. Overbred. Anyone who wants a “teacup” chihuahua needs to ask themselves why they are attracted to small ill creatures.

OMG! they are so adorable! I have a friend (who moved now) who had a neighbor who had one. His name was Chico. He’s sooooo cute! Although it is true that they do have lots of health problems and are more prone to diseases/illness. So even though theyr’e adorable, I’d probably not buy one, but that’s just me.

Theres a good way to discover difference between teacup (micro which in fact grows to 1.5-2 punds) and normal chihuahuas (2.5-6 pounds) when they are still very young by just check their paws.
Personally I am looking for a small size chihuahua on Long Island, unfortunately teacup chihuahua prices are just insane here, I am willing to spend around 1.000$ and I would aprecciate If somebody could drop here some advices where can I get them cheaper than in puppie shops. If you have any offers please contact with me by my email:
